OKLAHOMA CITY -

Firefighters are battling multiple grass fires across the Oklahoma City metro area Friday afternoon.

Oklahoma City fire officials are warning people of high fire danger on Friday and Saturday. As of Friday afternoon, Oklahoma City firefighters have responded to grass fires at at least 19 locations, including,

  • 6400 E. Wilshire,
  • 11800 S.W. 16th Street,
  • 3016 N.W. 61 Pl. (back yard,)
  • 4200 E. Wilshire,
  • 9200 W. Reno,
  • 19816 S.E. 92nd,
  • 9525 W. Reno Ave. WB,
  • 624 N. Shartel Ave.,
  • 9100 N. Shartel Ave.,
  • 16500 N. Meridian,
  • S. Shields Blvd. NB/ S.E. 54th St.,
  • 620 N.W. 92nd Street.
  • 1721 Manor Dr.
  • 2701 W. Memorial Rd. WB
  • 6401 E. Wilshire Blvd.
  • 807 SW. 48th St.
  • 13013 Peregrine Dr.
  • 8616 SW. 45th Ter.

All of these fires were contained quickly.

Bob Mills SkyNews 9 HD was heading to a grass fire when Pilot Jim Gardner spotted a structure fire near N.E. 50th and Kelley. That fire was quickly contained, as well.

Crews also contained another grass fire at N.W. 10th and Garth Brooks Blvd. in Yukon.

Bob Mills SkyNews 9 HD flew over a large grass fire near Sara Road and E. 1270 near Blanchard, Oklahoma. Just shortly after, another fire began burning six miles S. of Blanchard near 1340 and Winter Creek Road. That fire then jumped over to Elm Rd. and 2980, threatening a building.

Crews are also battling a rekindled fire from Thursday, in the 5300 block of W. Indian Hills Rd. and 48th Rd.

Bob Mills SkyNews 9 HD flew over a fire near Ninnekah, burning close to HWY 19.

Around 3:00 p.m., fire departments were called to assist with a large grass fire at HWY 18 and 1010 Road north of Meeker. Authorities say every fire department in Lincoln County has been called to the fire.

Bob Mills SkyNews 9 HD is now flying over the large grass fire near Meeker, threatening several structures in the area. One mobile home was lost, but crews say they now have this fire contained.

The Oklahoma City Fire Department sent out a release to remind people that the potential for having grass / wild land fires Friday and Saturday is great.  With temperatures into the 70s today, winds approaching 25 to 30 miles per hour, and humidity dropping to the 34 percent range, all of the pieces are in place for one of these fires to begin. The Oklahoma City Fire Department has already responded to 93 wild land fires since the beginning of January.

Fire officials urge people to use extreme caution on Friday if they are doing anything outdoors which could cause a spark.  The majority of the grass / wild land fires that they encounter were started by things such as burn piles getting out of control, discarded smoking materials, chains hanging from vehicles causing sparks on the roadway, outdoor cooking, welding, mowing, and a variety of other preventable activities.

The good news, fire officials said, is that the overwhelming majority of these fires are preventable.
