APMEX presented the food bank with a $100,000 check Friday afternoon, hoping to make up some for the shortfall.

The donation will equal to about 500,000 meals that will be handed out to families in need.

“I grew up hungry. I grew up in a family that was typical dysfunctional family. Parents are spilt and separated struggling to make ends meet,” said APMEX Founder Scott Thomas.

APMEX's President, Scott Thomas, started the online precious metal retailer. Thomas came from humble beginnings raised on welfare, but he turned a small coin shop into a company with profits in the billions.

“There's a lot of great organizations out there, at the end of the day you know if you are hungry and you don't have enough food in your belly there is no more difficult feeling than that,” said Thomas.

This year, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is down more than a million pounds of food.

APMEX donated earlier in the year, but to make up for the shortage the company presented a $100,000 check to the Regional Food Bank. Each dollar of that donation turns into five meals feeding those in need this holiday season.

APMEX is challenging everyone this holiday season to whatever they can no matter how little it may be.
