Not everyone will be in the giving mood this holiday season. Home burglaries rise this time every year because thieves know you have presents.
We have several tips on how you can burglar-proof your home. We're not talking anything like what Kevin did in "Home Alone." But the 90’s classic is right with home burglaries increasing during the holiday season.
The FBI estimates thieves will target 400,000 homes during November and December. Here's a few things you can do to "burglar-proof" your home from Swann Security.
First, make sure you hide presents, so people can't see them through your windows or doors. You also might consider not displaying your tree by a window.
Thieves can easily smash through and grab presents. If you're headed out of town, make sure it looks like someone is home by turning on some lights inside.
Burglars know to watch for outside lights being on all day and all night and mail piling up. So it might be a good idea to ask a neighbor to grab the mail.
Lastly, burglars know to look for a hidden door key somewhere near the front entrance. So don't put a spare under rocks or in a flowerpot.
It's suggested you remove the key while you're gone or give it to a neighbor.
