OKLAHOMA CITY -

After Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday kicks off the busiest time of the year for online retailers. But you are at a greater risk for scams when you buy online. We learned several ways to protect your information in Monday's consumer alert.

If you’re not a fan of long lines, you can now get those steals and deals from the comfort of your couch. But you have to be extra cautious when click purchase.

The Better Business Bureau says you have to first protect your computer. Make sure your laptop has the most recent updates for anti-virus, anti-spyware and a secure firewall.

Also, it's suggested you stick to trustworthy websites. You can look for the BBB logo on the site.

Take the time to read the store's privacy policy and what personal information is being collected. If you don't see a privacy policy posted, be aware your information may be sold without permission.

Make sure you confirm your online purchase is secure. Always look in the address box for the letter "S" in HTTPS and the lock symbol before paying.

It's often best to use a credit card, because under federal law, the shopper can dispute the charge they don't receive the item.

You'll also want to document your orders. There should be a confirmation page or confirmation email save that and any other emails you get from the company.

These tips are not just for Cyber Monday. The National Retail Federation predicts shoppers will do half of their shopping on line this year.
