Oklahoma has the sixth highest ratio of women murdered by men, according to a new study.
The study was conducted by the Violence Policy Center, based out of Washington D.C. According to the nonprofit group, this is the third consecutive year for the state of Oklahoma to rank in the top 10.
Tied with Tennessee at sixth in the county, Oklahoma stands at a murder rate of 1.65 per 100,000 for the year of 2013 (the most recent year for which data is available). The study comes ahead of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
In 2013, Oklahoma had 32 female homicide victims; 26 were white, 5 were black, and 1 was Native American.
The figures gathered come from homicides involving one female murder victim and one male offender, based on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) supplementary homicide report. The study also found that, nationwide, 94 percent of the women killed by men were murdered by someone they knew. The most common weapon used was a gun.
The states with the highest homicide rate of women killed by men per 100,000 are South Carolina (2.32), Alaska (2.29), New Mexico (2.00), Louisiana (1.99) and Nevada (1.95). Illinois came is a the state with the lowest rate of homicides perpetrated against women by men, at a rate of 0.24.
