EDMOND, Oklahoma -

The Labor Day holiday was created back in 1894 as a way to recognize the efforts of American workers.

While many workers enjoy a day off, just as many people spend the day laboring.

"When school is in it doesn't get busy until three when school lets out, but today it's been busy all day,” Shimmers employee Summer Showalter said. "Since I'm not going anywhere I might as well make money.”

You don't have to go far to find someone on the labor day clock.

"It's a good day on labor day to be cooking out,” Edmond Fire Department Battalion Chief Greg Westmier said. "A lot of times around the fire station it's a little more relaxed on a holiday, but we still have to do our duties and make sure that everybody is ready to go to work every day and respond to calls."

Or help people perk up for the job.

"There aren't a lot of places that are open,” Café Evoke barista Tanner Mason said. “So we've had a lot of business today."

Whether it is a perk of coffee or a perk in the form of extra pay, for a lot of people it's just another day.

“We know that we’re going to have to work holidays, and our families are used to that,” Westmier said.

The Edmond Fire Department responded to a grass fire Monday. Westmier said residents need to be careful with outdoor burning until the area has more rainfall.
