GUTHRIE, Oklahoma -

A local non-profit group handed out helpers to eight disabled veterans at Warner Park in Guthrie Thursday afternoon.

“Honoring America’s Warriors” recently got a donation of eight pure-bred German Shepherd puppies.

Thursday, Program Director Scotty Dee gave those young dogs to eight disabled veterans.  Those men and their families will train the canines for as long as two years to either be service dogs, or “search and rescue” dogs.

Dee says should a disaster occur locally, those specially-trained dogs and their owners could be called to duty.

Jeffery Olsen was one of the eight veterans to receive a dog Thursday.

“22 veterans a day is too high, that commit suicide?” asked News 9’s Steve Shaw.

“Yes sir.  I’ve been waiting a year to get a service dog.  When Scott called me up and said hey you’re on the list, that was one of the happiest days of my life, right after my daughter being born,” said Olsen.

Breeder Kent Martindale out of Stillwater donated the dogs.
