YUKON, Oklahoma -

They are what give many parents peace of mind when our kids are walking to school.

In Yukon, a retiring crossing guard provides more than a safe way across the street.

Heather Kendrick has eased parent fears for the past five years.

“If it were my kids, I'd want someone to watch them like I watch my own,” Kendrick said.

It started as a part-time job every weekday morning and afternoon.

But even after her children moved on from elementary school, Kendrick has remained on patrol.

Anybody can help a child across the street, but how many crossing guards get this kind of love back?

We saw no fewer than a half dozen hugs.

Kendrick said she is walking away from the cross walk business to spend more time with her family.

Not everyone at Lakeview Elementary is happy schools out for summer.

We're always looking for unique Oklahomans and places. If you have a great story, go to our Red Dirt Diaries page and tell us about it.
