SW OKC Man Discusses Passion For Orchids

While some men love the garage, Brian Truong prefers to spend his free time here.

“Welcome to my humble greenhouse,” Truong said in his southwest Oklahoma City home.

Inside this greenhouse you'll find mostly orchids. Truong's passion for orchids began when he was 9 years old when his uncle gave him his first orchid in Vietnam.

“Wow, that one plant have a lifetime, long lasting impression,” Truong said.

Today, his 40 by 40 greenhouse is filled to the rafters with hundreds of orchids ranging in multiple colors.

Some orchids are the typical yellow, pink, purple and burnt umber and some are the more unusual such as ones with polka dots, ones that look moths or shoes or have a Fu Manchu.

Some are quite a sight while others offer quite a smell. Though even with all these options, the most popular is white.

“When you have white orchids inside your home, it just light and fill up your room,” Truong said. “Light up your room. White orchids go with everything, so they say.”

Orchids grow just about anywhere, including Oklahoma.

“There is huge amount of orchids can be grown here in Oklahoma,” said.

Truong shares his orchids with the public selling them to local florists and each Saturday at the Oklahoma State University Oklahoma City Farmers Market.
