WARR ACRES, Oklahoma -

An Oklahoma County Sheriff's deputy walked away from a head-on crash with a suspected drunk driver. The collision was early Monday morning and now the 20-year-old suspect is in jail.

A mangled mess is all that was left after the head-on crash between Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jeff Hardin and 20-year-old Antonio Serna.

“It really looked like two crushed coke cans almost from the impact of the vehicles hitting each other,” said Mark Myers with the OCSO.

Around 1:30 a.m. Monday, Hardin was heading down NW 46th and MacArthur when he said Serna's truck crossed into his lane. Hardin said he tried to swerve, but they collided at 50 miles an hour.

The 12-year OCSO deputy's first reaction was to check on Serna.

“The deputy got out of his vehicle, ran over to the pickup truck and pulled out the individual that was behind the wheel,” Myers said.

Both of them had bumps and bruises and were taken to the hospital. That is where investigators said Serna did poorly on his field sobriety test.

“He appeared to be under the influence of alcohol - he smelled of alcohol, he had bloodshot eyes, his speech was slurred as well,” Myers explained.

The crash caused injuries, so investigators were immediately allowed to take a blood sample from Serna.

The sheriff's office said it is always looking for suspected drunk drivers and sometimes the drivers find them.

“In this case, we saw a worst case scenario,” Myers told News 9. “It's why we are so aggressive in getting out on the streets and doing everything we can to get people who are driving under the influence off the roads.”

Serna is in the Oklahoma County Jail on complaints of DUI and Reckless Driving. Investigators are still waiting to get Serna's blood results back, which could change the charges.
