DEL CITY, Oklahoma -

A metro woman was heartbroken after she claimed she was ripped off.

Griselda Cardenas told police and News 9 she got swindled out of her own home.

“It was my first home and I was so excited,” said Cardenas about the home she found advertised on Facebook.

In November of last year, the mother entered into a lease-to-own contract with a woman she thought was the owner.

Cardenas said she paid $1,500 as a down payment on a house she purchased for $35,000.

Cardenas showed News 9 what appeared to be a notarized contract and two receipts for $500. That was the amount she paid in rent the last two months to who she thought was the rightful owner.

She was recently told to move out by who she said are the true owners of the home.

“They are going to lock the doors to my house,” said a tearful Cardenas.

County records showed the home is owned by an LLC, which hasn't returned News 9 calls.

Griselda said the woman she was paying rent to now lives out of state according to her Facebook page and isn't returning her phone calls.

Meanwhile she packed-up her belongings and searching for a home and answers to give to her three kids.

“He says mom, where are we going to stay?” said Cardenas about her 7-year-old's questions.

Cardenas filed a police report in Del City.

She said she hopes others will learn from her mistake in not doing enough homework before handing over the cash.

Del City police said they've seen scams like this and want to remind people to make sure whoever you are renting or buying from is a reputable source.
