NORMAN, Oklahoma -

A police officer shot an armed man Sunday morning after a disturbance call in Southwest Norman. Now that person is listed in critical condition.

"We responded to a disturbance call. In other words, a person at that address called us and said, ‘We've got a problem here,'” said Capt. Tom Easley of the Norman Police Department.

Norman Police say the problem started at a home at the corner of Briggs St. and Haynes Ln. where several people were gathered and someone called 911 reporting the issue.

An officer arrived around 11:45 a.m. Sunday, and somehow, a man from the home and the officer ended up in the parking lot in front of a row of business, when the officer shot the man, who was armed, multiple times.

"Indications are that the individual who was shot had some sort of weapon, now what specifically that was I've heard different versions of it and haven't gotten clarity on it," Easley said.

Michael Barden lives off 24th and Brooks and said he heard three gunshots and what sounded like a high speed chase as police cars swarmed the scene.

"Seeing this happen a block from my house, twice in less than six months, is starting to become a little unnerving," Barden said.

The man shot was then taken to OU Medical Center in critical condition.

"It's becoming kind of a normal thing here in my neighborhood. This is happening more and more. So I'd like to see what the real story of this is," Barden said.

Norman Police plan to do a thorough walk-through with the officer involved to better understand what happened.

Police have not identified the man shot, though the owner of Sooner Legends Hotel, Bar and Restaurant said the man is the son of a housekeeper at the hotel.

The officer involved has also not been identified and was not injured. He was placed on routine administrative assignment.
