EDMOND, Oklahoma -

There's a fight brewing in Edmond over a proposed grocery store and neighbors say the developer is taking a shortcut in getting the plan approved.

The developer hasn't said what grocery store may move in at the corner of Covell Rd. and Coltrane Rd. in North Edmond. In the renderings, the development looks very similar to a Walmart Neighborhood Market with its green awning and signs.

“I don't think the area is ready for a commercial property of this size,” said Ashely Perkins, who lives at the Ashforde Oaks neighborhood nearby.

Perkins said she is concerned a development of that size will bring way too much traffic to the area.

The City of Edmond requires that the developer widen the intersection of Covell and Coltrane for the project. City officials tell News 9 the developer is asking to pay an “in lieu of fee” instead of paying for widening. The developer is also asking for other road accommodations as well.

“It seems like a shortcut,” said Perkins about the developer's plan.

The amount of the “In lieu of fee” hasn't been agreed upon.

Edmond City Council will debate the grocery store proposal on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at their meeting. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.
