CALUMET, Oklahoma -

Canadian County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Calumet, Oklahoma, man who is accused of getting a 15-year-old boy drunk and fondling him.

According to the Sheriff's office, on Tuesday, 62-year-old Virgil Putnam was taken into custody on charges of Committing Lewd or Indecent Acts Upon A Child.

Investigators said they learned of the sexual abuse early Sunday morning after they received a phone call from the victim reaching out for help. Deputies responded and found the victim walking aimlessly down State Highway 66 in a despondent state.

Once the victim realized he was safe, investigators said he fully disclosed what had happened the night before.

According to the Sheriff's office, Putnam had provided enough alcohol to the under-aged victim for him to become intoxicated. That's when Putnam sexually assaulted the boy by groping his genitals.

"The only good thing about this arrest is that we've been able to take a predator out of circulation, but we still have a victim that's scarred for the rest of his life," said Randall Edwards, Canadian County Sheriff.

Investigators learned that after Putnam had gotten the victim drunk, he offered to pay the boy to pull his pants down, and allow Putnam to hold his genitals. Once the sexual assault was over and Putnam fell asleep, the young boy was able to get out of the house and call for help, according to the Sheriff's office.

"When my deputies picked up the young boy not only was he still intoxicated, but he also appeared to be in a desperate state of mind," Sheriff Edwards said.

According to the Sheriff's office, on Tuesday, Putnam provided a full confession to investigators. He was taken into custody and booked into the county jail. His bond was set at $50,000.00 and he remains in custody.
