UNION CITY, Oklahoma -

The Oklahoma State Department of Health confirmed Tuesday morning that there are no confirmed cases of bacterial meningitis at Union City Schools.

Monday night, Union City Superintendent Todd Carel told News 9 that classes are canceled Tuesday and Wednesday, due to three confirmed cases of meningitis.

Carel urged parents to get their children tested.

However, Tuesday morning, officials with the State Department of Health said that the three students were tested by the state epidemiologist, and all results came back negative for bacterial meningitis.

Officials with the Oklahoma State Department of Health told News 9 that they can 100 percent rule out bacterial meningitis because that's what they tested for, and there were no confirmed cases. As for viral meningitis, officials said they cannot 100 percent rule that out because they didn't test for that.

"[The State Department of Health] told me there are no confirmed cases of bacterial meningitis, which [if it's not bacterial] is not classified as a reportable case, and no public health response is needed," Union City Superintendent Todd Carel said.
