PERRY, Oklahoma -

An Oklahoma bull rider was killed over the weekend at a rodeo in Perry. The Oklahoma medical examiner says 25-year-old Shane Greene died from a laceration after a bull stepped on his throat.

“His passion was bull riding. That's what he loved. That's what he lived,” said Shane's brother Chad, who was at the rodeo on Saturday. “I was on the back on the bucking shoots. My brother always wanted me to be there with him.”

Shane Greene grew up in Perry and the crowd was cheering for him.

“[We] did about everything together,” said Cody Edgar, Shane's best friend. “Everybody he ran into loved him, that's for sure. He was always there for anyone who needed it.”

Shane Parli, vice president of the Cherokee Strip Riding Club who ran the event, is not releasing any information about what happened. But those at the rodeo describe a tragic scene where 25-year-old Greene slipped under the animal.

“He was making every jump with that bull just like he should have,” said Chad.

But when Greene slid off, the bull's hoof cut his throat.

“He got up and ran,” described Chad. “I knew shortly what had happened he was covering his neck.”

Medics on the scene couldn't save him Shane.

“When you want to dance with the beast there's a price you pay sometimes,” said Edgar. “And it just happened to be the wrong time.”

“I'm just glad I was there that last night for him,” said Chad. “I'm glad he could hear a familiar voice those moments.”

Funeral Services for Greene are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 2 p.m.

Family expects a big crowd for that funeral, so they are holding it at the Perry Event Center, 424 N. 7th St., Perry, Okla. 73077. The viewing will be held on Tues. Sept. 16, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the Brown Dugger Funeral Home, in Perry ,off of 7th St.
