Soccer Sweeps Weekend with 5-0 Win

NORMAN, Okla. -- After a thrilling double-overtime win on Friday night, the No. 20 Oklahoma soccer team showed no signs of slowing down on Sunday in Norman.

The Sooners crushed the visiting Central Arkansas Bears at John Crain Field, shutting out UCA to the tune of a 5-0 victory. Oklahoma (4-1-1) dominated the stat sheet, holding commanding advantages over the Bears (3-2-1) in shots (23-1), shots on goal (11-1) and corners (5-0). OU's five goals were its most in a single match since 2011 vs. UAB.

With a 4-1-1 overall record, Oklahoma is off to its best start through six matches since 2009. Even more impressively, the Sooners are 2-1 against opponents ranked in at least one top 25 poll this season.

OU opened with immediate and suffocating pressure against the Bears, picking off every offensive effort and firing nine shots within the first 20 minutes of play. The Sooners finally struck in the 20th minute when Caren Nelson pushed in an attempt on UCA goalkeeper Anna Hughes, and Shiloh Price nudged the ball over the line for her first goal of the season.

It only took nine minutes for Oklahoma to find the goal again. Laura Rayfield sent in a free kick from the right side and true freshman defender Madeline Brem made the connection. Brem's header soared into the net from the middle of the box for a 2-0 Sooner lead.

A Sooner sub put another goal on the board as time ticked off the clock in the first half. Rasha Roberts entered the game and made her presence known almost immediately. Devin Barrett fed in a pass to Roberts and the freshman fired in a hard strike from the edge of the box that shot past Hughes, sending OU into halftime with a commanding 3-0 lead.

The OU coaching staff used the opportunity to find playing time for its considerably deep roster in the second half, with 26 players seeing time on the field throughout the match. The Sooners continued to pressure the UCA defense throughout the second half, but several shots flew wide or missed the target to keep OU from extending its lead.

Oklahoma added its fourth goal in the 83rd minute when Barrett drove down the left side of the field, eluding defenders right and left to fire in her second goal of the season. Chelsea Jackson took the assist on the play.

OU took advantage of a frazzled Bear defense to tack on its fifth and final goal of the match under a minute later. Brem struck again for the Sooners, sending in her second goal of the afternoon on a strike from 15 yards out off an assist from classmate Tori Bowman. The score of 5-0 would stand as the final tally from the match.

Oklahoma has outscored its opponents 13-4 through its first six matches of 2014. Sunday's shutout of UCA was its second this season.

Oklahoma begins a two-week stretch of away matches next weekend, traveling to North Texas and Tulsa. The Sooners will face the Mean Green on Friday night at 7 p.m. before facing the Golden Hurricane on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. OU is undefeated on the road this season.

Cowgirls Fall To Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. – Oklahoma State was unable to hold a lead and came up short of its first win of the season Sunday as the Cowgirls dropped a 3-1 match to Arizona at the Sun Devil Classic.

The loss drops OSU to 0-6-0 on the year, while Arizona improved to 3-1-1 by recording all three of its goals in the final 6:02 against the Cowgirls.

“We changed our system of play and felt like that would give us the best chance to win,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “We looked comfortable with the 1-0 lead for most of the second half, but you have to give Arizona credit – the first two goals they scored were side netting, top 90.

“We'll regroup and try to get healthy. We have a six-game home stand coming up, and we'll try to get things started with a win and build on that.”

After a scoreless first half which saw the two teams evenly matched on the stat sheet, the Cowgirls would take the lead in the 58th minute.

During an attack, Allie Stephenson was tripped in the box by AU's Laura Pimienta, and a penalty kick was awarded. Stephenson stepped up and drilled the shot off the hand of Wildcat goalie Gabby Kaufman and into the net to give OSU a 1-0 advantage.

That lead held until the 84th minute when Lexie Selman blasted a 25-yard shot top shelf to the far post to tie things at 1-1.

Less than two minutes later, Arizona took the lead.

After OSU was whistled for a handball, the Wildcats were awarded a free kick from just outside the box, and Gabi Stoian delivered a left-footed shot into the back of the net to put UA up 2-1 with 4:44 remaining.

The Wildcats tallied their final goal with just 18 second remaining in the match when Stoian added her second goal to seal the win.

UA finished with a 16-8 advantage in shots, while the Cowgirls held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

OSU returns to action at home this week as the Cowgirls host Cal Poly Friday night before a Sunday contest against UT Martin.

Tulsa Men's Soccer Team Falls to CSUN, 2-1, in Overtime

Tulsa, Oklahoma – The Tulsa men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to CSUN in the final game of the 2014 Holiday Inn Hurricane Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU fell to 2-2 on the season, while the Matadors moved to 2-2 overall.

“They are physical, very strong and they made it tough for us to combine,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “The second half we took control of the game and I was really pleased with our performances from our substitutes today. I think it was a good performance to build on in terms of who we can bring in off the bench and who can do a good job.”

Nicolas Camacho put the Matadors on the board first at the 28:51 mark off a pass from David Turcios and CSUN held onto that lead for nearly 60 minutes. In the 88th minute, Akeil Barrett punched in a goal from two yards out off a combination from Quinn Starker and Jordan Speed to force overtime.

With just 1:21 ticked off the clock in the first overtime period, Sagi Lev-Ari scored the golden goal to give the Matadors the victory.

CSUN had a 12-8 lead in shots, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, but TU had a 6-5 lead in corner kicks.

Ray Saari and Byron Knowles-Ramirez led the Golden Hurricane with two shots apiece, while four others had one attempt. Jake McGuire logged all 91:21 in goal and had four saves.

For their efforts in the Hurricane Classic, Barrett, Cameron Drackett and Bradley Bourgeois were tabbed to the all-tournament team.

Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, September 13th against eighth-ranked Creighton. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Hurricane Stadium.

Tulsa Women Fall to Tennessee, 1-0

Knoxville, Tenn. – The Tulsa women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Tennessee on Sunday evening at the Regal Soccer Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. TU fell to 5-1 on the season, while UT moved to 3-2 overall.

“I thought we played really well and played hard,” Head Coach Kyle Cussen said. “We stuck to our game plan, but unfortunately they got a free kick and it deflected off the wall and went in. It was a bit unfortunate, but this was one of our better games of the season and we are getting better each game. Roman Edwards and Claire Maris did a great job of shutting down their two best players, but it was a great team effort. I am proud of the team.”

The Volunteers' goal came at the 31:41 mark off a free kick taken by Kiah Allen outside the box.

Lauren King, Madison Smith and Rachel Thun each had two shots, while Claire Maris had one attempt. Courtney McKeon logged all 90 minutes between the posts and picked up four saves.

Tennessee had an 11-7 lead in shots, including a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal, and a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.

Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 12th against Tennessee-Martin. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
