Postal Worker Stabbed While Delivering Mail In OKC

Rain, heat or snow won't stop them, and for one metro mail carrier, neither will a knife, after she is stabbed but then continues on her delivery route near N.W. 122nd and May.

“She's new to this route,” said one resident. “She's been on it maybe a month.”

Not long on the job, but she had her work cut out for her when she walked up to a house to deliver mail and was met on the porch by Bennie Joe Edwards, Sr., who police say stabbed her in the back with a paring knife.

“I saw her moving her bag and screaming in terror, because she was scared,” said witness, Jocelyn Bell. “I saw this thin black man out in his yard, and he was coming at her, and she kept pushing her bag.”

Bell says a woman, who neighbors believe is Edward's mother, came out of the home and told her knife wielding son to stop, but he told her to go back in the house. That's when Jocelyn stepped in.

“And I just said, ‘Hey! Hey! Hey!,' and he stopped,” she said.

The mail carrier got into her mail truck, but Edwards wasn't finished.

“That's when he picked up something big out of his yard and threw it at her van,” Bell said.

She drove up the road and stopped again to see how badly she was hurt.

“She moved up to where this driveway is, and that's when she assessed herself,” Bell said.

Then, amazingly, she kept on delivering the mail. That paring knife did break the woman's skin.

News 9 caught up with her, but she could not talk about the incident.
