The Oklahoma City Zoo is asking the public to help name its new, male Indian rhinoceros calf.

Niki, a 7-year-old, greater one-horned Indian rhinoceros gave birth to the calf at 5:20 p.m. on June 21. Now, the zoo's rhino care team has narrowed the list down to three, and they need your help choosing the best name.

Garjan: Pronounced "gar-zyawn." The name is Hindi for thunder and roaring. OKC citizens know about Thunder, and this little rhino has roared his way into our hearts and is a thunderous success for conservation.

Rupert: In keeping with a family tradition, the newborn's grandma was named Penny and his mom is named Nickle. Rupert is the Zoo's twist on rupee, the official currency of the Republic of India, and the Keepers' favorite.

Russell: Everyone knows a certain basketball player who has passion, flair, energy and might be a little feisty, too, just like the new, little rhino.

Fans can cast their vote for their favorite name on the Oklahoma City Zoo's website, now through July 10. The winning name will be announced July 14.

The Oklahoma City Zoo is also hosting its annual Bowling For Rhinos fundraiser at 7 p.m. on July 19 at Heritage Lanes. All proceeds benefit rhino conservation projects in Asia and Africa.
