HOWE, Texas -

An Oklahoma State Senator was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated in Grayson County, Texas, late Thursday night.

According to the Howe Police Department, Oklahoma Sen. Harry Coates, (R - Seminole), was stopped on southbound US 75 near the town of Howe around 11 p.m. Thursday, after a driver reported the vehicle to be driving erratically.

Responding officer made contact with Coates, 63, and reported that he exhibited signs of intoxication and that he could not successfully complete a field sobriety test. Coates then consented to have his blood drawn at a local hospital. The results of that blood test were not immediately available.

Authorities took Coates into custody where he was later booked at the Grayson County Jail. During the booking process, officers learned that Coates was a senator for district 28 in Oklahoma and that he had just finished his last day in office.

Coates bonded out of jail early Friday morning. In 2009, he filed SB 1014, a bill designed to increase the penalties for drunk driving in the state of Oklahoma.

No other information has been released at this time.
