OKLAHOMA CITY -

A rally at the State Capitol Monday afternoon is expected to draw hundreds of parents and teachers from across the state.

Parents are asked to meet on the 4th floor outside the House Chamber to pack the House Gallery. What they want is for lawmakers to vote "yes" on House Bill 2625. This bill would require a school committee comprised of a parent, two teachers, a principal and a reading specialist to determine the fate of a third grader struggling to show proficiency in reading.

Right now, because of a 2011 law, students are automatically held back if they score "not proficient" on Oklahoma's third grade reading test. Those results came in last Friday and found 16-percent of Oklahoma third graders were "not proficient."

Those students will have two more chances to demonstrate basic reading skills through a student portfolio, or an alternative reading assessment.

The group known as the Oklahoma Central PLAC wants to meet here at 1 p.m. Monday. Beginning Monday, a hotline is available for parents who have questions about the reading test.

You can call beginning at 8 a.m. Parents and community members can call (405)-521-3774 to leave comments or questions.

District personnel who have questions should call (405)-521-3301, the main OSDE helpdesk line. Questions will be answered or calls routed to appropriate staff.
