EDMOND, Oklahoma -

The hot temperatures are reminding us all to pay closer attention to who is in the backseat of our cars. Oklahoma ranks 9th in the nation for children dying in hot cars.

A group of elementary students are winners of a nationwide competition after their invention. This is not your average Science Fair.

Three second grade students from John Ross Elementary entered the ExploraVision Awards. It's a nationwide science and technology competition. They competed against 5,000 other teams' ideas and won first place.

Their idea is the Hot Car Safety System. Part of their entry involved making a website, submitting a video demonstrating how it works and what they've learned about the problem they're trying to solve.

The students, Elora Johnson, Neel Mandal and Cierra Newberry, will go to Washington DC next month where they'll receive the award at the National Press Club. They also won a $10,000 savings bond and a tablet.

Their teacher has consulted a patent attorney and they're in the very early stages of a long process to patent their idea.
