OKLAHOMA CITY -

Runners across Oklahoma are making their final preparations for the 188th running of the Boston Marathon next Monday.

More than 100 Oklahomans are signed up for the 26.2 mile race. But ahead of the race, many are reflecting on the significance of running the annual event that was bombed last year.

Three people were killed and more than 260 injured in the bombing. This year represents more than just a continued tradition but something more powerful in mind of David Bernstein. He has run his fair share of marathons and has the medals to prove it - 24 of them.

"It's amazing. I mean I never forget the sensation of crossing the corner and getting to the last mile so it never gets easier but it's really rewarding," explained Bernstein.

This year's Boston Marathon will be a first for Bernstein and it has a special significance of healing after bombs exploded at last year's race.

"I think that Oklahoma City and Boston have a special bond now given what happened in both cities," he said. "I think it's extra special because there's definitely a big impact on running just for yourself or running for something bigger than yourself, which is in memory of someone else."

With just six days to go before the 118th running of the Boston Marathon, thousands of runners are making their final preparations. Bernstein and dozens more from Oklahoma City are among them. Up to a million people are expected to line the marathon route.

"We are Boston strong and I think everyone is on board with cheering," said Bernstein. "I'm sure it will be really exciting just to be at the starting line with good positive energy."

More than 100 Oklahomans will be running this year's Boston Marathon.
