Strong Winds, Low Humidity Creates Extreme Wildfire Threat

South winds will crank up tonight across Oklahoma, followed by even stronger northwest winds on Tuesday.

A deep area of low pressure over Montana is going to be responsible for the fierce winds tonight and tomorrow. After midnight, south winds will begin to ramp up across the state gusting, at times, to 40 mph. Winds will begin to decrease some by mid-morning Tuesday, but will ramp right back up behind a cold front. The front will move through central Oklahoma around noon with winds increasing behind it 20 to 30 mph gusting to 45 mph. Winds will be the strongest Tuesday in northwest Oklahoma, where gusts to 50 mph will be common.

We did have some nice rain across the state over the weekend, but most of western Oklahoma only saw a couple tenths of an inch. These strong winds and low humidity will create an extreme wildfire threat once again Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Please be very careful.

Lows tonight will drop into the upper 30s and low 40s with highs on Tuesday topping out right around 70°.
