Snow Days Force Metro Educators To Prepare Intense Lesson Plans

Posted: Updated:

It's crunch time for thousands of students who've missed class because of the snow. Final exams are right around the corner for most metro schools.

Students in the Oklahoma City area have enjoyed a 5-day weekend. The school hallways have been quiet since late last week.

"Three days is manageable," John Marshall High School principal Aspasia Carlson told News 9. "It's going to be a little bit hectic but it's manageable."

Carlson and others are still hard at work condensing lesson plans to make up for the missed days. For horticulture teacher Chris Ivy, the coming days will mean extra time in the classroom.

"It's just taking out of your own time and staying after school with [students]," said Ivy. "It's taking your lunch periods and having them come in and get the extra help that they might need."

To blame for the missed days are the side roads throughout central Oklahoma. Those roads have been iced over since Thursday. On Tuesday, Oklahoma saw the sun … melting ice along the side roads. However, the slight warm up didn't get the job done completely.

The weather has forced schools like John Marshall to take full advantage of extra tutoring sessions. Some sessions have already been scheduled for when students return.

"[The students] have continual assignments that they can be doing online from wherever they're at as long as they have the Internet," said Carlson.

In school districts across the metro, administrators are busy rescheduling events and doing their best to pack them into the final days of 2013. For Oklahoma City Public Schools, final exams are set for Monday and Tuesday of next week.

OKCPS allows up to seven snow days to be built into each school year before the district starts adding days to the end of the year.
