Thousands of Oklahomans are heading to malls and small businesses to purchase their holiday gifts; but thieves will also be out, ready to snatch people's merchandise, money, and holiday cheer.

The Oklahoma City Police Department says thieves look for crimes of opportunity, but people can reduce their chances of becoming victims by following some basic safety tips.

1. When shopping, don't leave items of value in plain view in your vehicle.
2. Shop with a friend because you are less likely to be targeted.
3. Park in a well-lit area and remember where you park.
4. Have your keys in hand when you approach your car.
5. Pay attention to your surroundings. If something looks suspicious, err on the side of caution and report it.
6. Women: keep your purses closed while shopping, and always keep them in your sight.
