Thunder Gets Help; OSU's Title Hopes Take Hit--OK Sports Week In Review

Posted: Updated:

The Good

OU Baseball/Softball

It was another great week for the Sooners on the diamond. OU's No. 15 baseball team took down Iowa, Texas A&M-CC and New Mexico this week to improve to 9-0, but compared to the women, that might not even be considered impressive. The Sooners' softball team, now 15-0, has shut out its opponent in 10 of its 15 games. To take it another level, OU is 7-0 against ranked opponents, outscoring them a combined 47-0. They aren't just winning, they're completely dominating.

New Thunder Players

OKC did some shopping at last week's trade deadline, dealing Eric Maynor and acquiring wing-man Ronnie Brewer from the Knicks. Brewer will bring intensity and defense to the Thunder rotation and should allow OKC to match up a little better against small lineups. To replace Maynor, the Thunder re-signed veteran guard Derek Fisher. Fisher played for OKC last season and provided valuable leadership and clutch shooting. Sam Presti managed to get both of these guys while giving up a second-round draft pick; well done.

Bassmaster Classic

What a week on Grand Lake. Cliff Pace won this year's event, but that's not the biggest story. The popularity of the Bassmaster Classic brought large crowds all over Tulsa, especially to the BOK Center for the weigh-ins. All that traffic had an estimated $26 million economic boost to the city of Tulsa; it doesn't get much better than that.

Chesapeake Arena Home Cooking

The Thunder hit a new low point on the season last week when they blew a large fourth-quarter lead and let James Harden's Rockets mentally intimidate them. That loss came right after their pre-All-Star-break beatdown loss to the Miami Heat. OKC needed a pick-me-up, and turned to the home crowd to get it. The Thunder returned home to stomp both the Wolves and Bulls to end the week, each win coming in a refreshingly different fashion. OKC outscored the Wolves in a track meet and locked the Bulls down with excellent defense.

The Not So Good

Tulsa Basketball

The Golden Hurricane men looked to be turning things around by going 2-0 in dramatic fashion last week, but a 0-2 mark this week eliminates that momentum completely. The TU women also looked like they were turning the season around, but a 0-2 week ends their four-game winning streak. Both of these squads will need to regroup before their conference tournaments.

OSU's Big 12 Title Hopes

Wednesday's heartbreaking, double-overtime loss to Kansas was crushing to the Cowboy's chances of winning their first Big 12 regular-season title since 2003-04. In true Kansas fashion, the Jayhawks made the plays when they mattered the most and got the benefit of a couple questionable foul calls. Kansas repeated its Houdini act Monday night in Ames, battling from down five with 47 second left to force overtime thanks to clutch shooting and a laughable no-call on the game's final posession. The ‘Hawks took advantage in the OT and are looking more and more like they'll soon wrap up another Big 12 title.

OU Women's Hoops

Times are getting rough for the Sooner women. OU has lost four of five, including back-to-back blowout losses to OSU and Baylor. The Sooners now sit at 19-9 and 9-7 in the Big 12, a pace that is inching them closer and closer to the NCAA Tournament bubble. OU could use a win over Kansas on senior night to get back on track.
