My 2 Cents: Bill Allows For School Board To Decide To Arm Teachers

They're may come a time in the not too distant future, when your local school board has to decide a deadly serious issue. And in my opinion, that's the way it should be.

A bill that passed a House committee on Wednesday would allow your school board to decide whether to allow trained teachers and administrators to be armed at your child's school. They'd go through a six-week course of reserve officer training by CLEET.

This comes as an immediate response to the Sandy Hook massacre, and it would be easy to pull back and see it's just a knee jerk reaction.

I don't think it is.

Virtually, every day I read accounts about school violence. School shootings are still infrequent, but that I even have to say that tells you the threat is increasing.

Folks, you talk about a soft target, our schools are about as soft as it gets, and especially our elementary schools where there are fewer men to help if a violent intruder were to come in.

I want my children's teachers, their protectors when I'm away from them, to be able to protect them and not just try, valiantly as they did in Connecticut, to hide them from an attacker.

It won't be right for all districts, but I like that this bill lets the parents decide through their local school boards.
