Former OKC Mayor To Lie In Repose At City Hall

People across the state are remembering and honoring former Oklahoma City Mayor Patience Sewell Latting.

Latting died December 29 at the age of 94. Not only was she the first woman elected mayor of Oklahoma City, she was the first female mayor of a U.S. city with more than 350,000 residents. She served as mayor of Oklahoma City from April 1971 to April 1983.

"Mayor Latting was a visionary and a trailblazer for accountability in city government," said Mayor Mick Cornett. "Her accomplishments during her 12 years as mayor were immeasurable and her influence continues to guide our city."

Latting was born in Texhoma, Oklahoma on August 27, 1918. A graduate of Classen High School, she attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, with a bachelor's degree in mathematics her junior year. She later received her master's degree in economics and statistics from Columbia University. She married attorney Trimble B. Latting and together they had four children: Francelia, Nancy, Jim and Cynthia.

Latting's body will lie in repose from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, January 3, on the second floor of City Hall, 200 N. Walker. Her funeral is scheduled for Saturday, January 5, at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presybterian Church, 4400 N. Shartel.
