High school is so much more complicated now than it was when I was there. The requirements for graduation, the testing, positioning yourself to get into college.
As a parent of three high schoolers currently, I can tell you it's very difficult to keep up with. Now I don't make excuses for lazy parenting, but there are lot of times when you have to lean on the teachers and administrators of your child's school for their expertise and guidance through the educational maze.
So my heart goes out to the families of Douglass High School Seniors who are now discovering that they have been tricked into thinking they were on the road to graduation and even college if they wanted.
An investigation of the school found grade tampering and attendance fraud, and the principal resigned last month.
An educational audit of the school finds 3 out of 4 seniors at Douglass don't have the credits to graduate on time and 95 percent of juniors aren't on track to graduate. That's outrageous, and the school district owes it to those families and students to pour in all of the resources necessary to help those students graduate. Sadly, for some it's probably too late.
I hope, I hope it's a problem unique to Douglass High School. We'll see.
