OKLAHOMA CITY -

A group of gun owners welcomed the implementation of Oklahoma's new Open Carry Law with a breakfast in northwest Oklahoma City.

Members of the Oklahoma Open Carry Association met just after midnight Thursday at Beverly's Pancake House on Northwest Expressway. The group formed in May after Gov. Mary Fallin signed the bill into law.

The law went into effect Thursday. It allows Oklahomans with a license to carry a concealed firearm to carry their handguns out in the open. To be carried openly, those weapons must be in a holster or belt, less than 16 inches long, and .45 caliber or smaller.

Guns still cannot be taken into government buildings and public meetings, bars and taverns, schools, college campuses, and professional sporting events.

Bryan Hull with the Open Carry Association says the law isn't something people should fear.

"Nobody needs to be worried about this. The law requires people to have a handgun license, which means they've been through training and have a background check," Hull said.

Many people are wondering what the new law means for law enforcement in Oklahoma. News 9's Kelly Ogle and Amanda Taylor met with officers to see how their training has changed. Watch News 9 at 10 tonight, Thursday, November 1, as Kelly and Amanda learn what the new law means for police on the streets.
