Sooners Run All Over Texas In Red River Romp

Posted: Updated:
DALLAS -

By the time the 2012 edition of the Red River Rivalry, only half the crowd remained, and basically every one of them was wearing crimson.

The Oklahoma Sooners used a dominant defensive performance and also ran for 343 yards to pound archrival Texas, 63-21.

A year after OU defeated Texas 55-17, the 2012 edition of this historic rivalry figured to be a much closer affair. That idea ended fairly quickly, as OU forced five Texas three and outs in the first half and raced to a 36-2 halftime lead.

The Sooners defense wasn't the only unit performing well, either. The offense gashed the Texas defense for 677 yards, 343 on the ground, and 334 through the air.

Damien Williams led the charge on the ground for OU, rushing for 167 yards on 22 carries, including a 95-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that began to break the game open.

Fullback Trey Millard had 164 all-purpose yards, including 119 receiving yards. Landry Jones threw for 321 yards and two touchdowns, becoming the Sooners all-time leader in career wins with 33, passing Steve Davis.

Texas quarterback David Ash had a miserable day, throwing just 13 for 29 for 113 yards and two interceptions. Texas also only managed 74 yards on the ground.

Oklahoma took the opening kickoff and marched straight down the field, showcasing new offensive wrinkles, including running quarterback Blake Bell on first down twice after converting a third and fourth down respectively. The second time Bell ran on first down, he ran eight yards for an OU touchdown. However, the extra point was blocked and returned by Texas' Quandre Diggs for two points, making the score 6-2 in favor of the Sooners.

After three consecutive three and outs combined for both teams, OU found itself pinned at the Texas five-yard line. On second down, Damien Williams took the handoff and, with the help of two key blocks downfield by Justin Brown and Kenny Stills, raced 95 yards to put OU up 13-2. It was the longest running play in Red River Rivalry history.

The Sooners continued to pour it on, getting a pair of one-yard touchdown runs from Bell to boost the margin to 27-2. The second score was set up by a 73-yard screen pass from Jones to Millard. The big fullback ran down the Texas sideline, hurdled one man, while another tackler bounced off him, and took it down to the Texas two-yard line.

The Longhorns picked up their first, first down of the game on the next drive on a 31-yard pass from David Ash to Mike Davis. However, Aaron Colvin, who was beat on the pass, picked off Ash's throw on the very next play.

After an OU punt pinned the Longhorns at their own one-yard line, running back Joe Bergeron was swarmed under in the end zone, resulting in a safety. After a 42-yard return on the free kick by Brennan Clay, the Sooners marched 47 yards in eight plays, with 35 of them coming on Williams rushes. Bell punched it in from a yard out to send OU to the locker room up 36-2.

The Sooners ran and incredible 52 plays in the first half, and held the ball over 21 minutes, racking up 407 yards to just 65 for Texas.

The Sooners forced a quick Texas punt on the Longhorns first possession, but Landry Jones threw an interception on the very next series that Texas cornerback Carrington Byndom took 28 yards for a touchdown, trimming the OU lead to 36-8. OU responded with a Michael Hunnicutt field goal, and after forcing a fumble by Ash, Jones found Millard wide open over the middle for a 25-yard score and a 46-8 OU lead.

Each team tacked on two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the final margin. The Sooners head home to Norman to take on the Kansas Jayhawks next week at 6 p.m.
