A fire spread so quickly through a house in northwest Oklahoma City early Thursday morning that firefighters and neighbors worried the flames would jump to nearby homes.
Neighbors first smelled smoke just after midnight in the 3900 block of Landmark Road; that's near Lake Overholser near Highway 66 and the Kilpatrick Turnpike. When they went outside, they saw flames shooting from a house. They quickly called 911.
"The whole second story was totally engulfed in flames, and the garage," said neighbor Michelle Newman. "The truck, we had to get it backed up because it was melting in the front."
Firefighters arrived within minutes after the 911 call. They were able to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring homes, but they said the burned house is likely a total loss. Investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire.
The homeowners were not inside the house when the fire started. They were out of town, but rushed home when neighbors called to tell them what happened. The homeowners are temporarily staying with neighbors.
