Woodward, Oklahoma -

The city of Woodward is now working with the state to apply for a federal disaster declaration following the deadly tornado that ripped through the town late Saturday night.

City leaders held a news conference Monday afternoon. They revealed in addition to the six people killed, 28 others were injured. The twister destroyed 89 homes and 13 businesses, but officials say that number will rise.

As residents try to clean up the debris and rebuild their lives, officials are warning them to be on the lookout for scam artists. Police say crooks are impersonating FEMA workers and asking victims for money to help the rebuilding efforts.

City officials say they know there are honest people eager to help the victims of the tornado. They're asking anyone who wants to help to donate these very specific items:

  • Flashlights
  • 6-volt lanterns
  • Trash bags
  • AA and AAA batteries
  • Tarps
  • Work Gloves
  • Headlamps

Donations should be taken to Woodward's old armory building at 100 Temple Houston Drive from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. People can also donate money directly to Woodward through the Bank of Western Oklahoma by putting money in the "Woodward Tornado Relief Fund."

The American Red Cross is also taking donations.

You can drop off clothing and shoes at Joseph's Coat on Main Street in Woodward. Non-perishable food items at the Living Word Fellowship church at 1310 Oklahoma.

You can also donate $10 to relief efforts by texting Red Cross, all one word, to 90999.

A distribution site is also set up at the Woodward Church of Christ. Residents can go there to pick up water, tarps and other supplies.
