MOORE, Oklahoma -

Beauty shop, spa, or salon?  Which do you prefer?  If you travel to Moore you can get a traditional haircut at a very non-traditional barber shop.

Laura Walker started Cut 109, Moore's only all-female barber shop almost a decade ago with her mother Peggy Williams.  The shop has been on Moore's Broadway Avenue for fifty years, and was in a different building fifty years before then.  Walker and her mother have made a lot of new friends and customers since then.

"These people become part of our family," Walker said.  "And there's something rewarding about making people feel good about the way they look."

It wasn't always that way.  Williams remembers some old attitudes were difficult to change.

"They would come up and look in the door and they'd say 'Oh, there's women in there, I'm not gonna have no women cut my hair,'" said Williams.

These days the women have a steady stream of regular customers that includes men, women, and children.  It's become a family affair for Laura, in addition to her mother Peggy, her grandmother Naomi Rose helps keep the shop tidy.

"I get to sweep the floor," laughed Rose.  "That makes me employee of the month."

Actually, Naomi gets elected employee of the month...every month.  Her picture has its own place of honor on the barbershop wall.

Three generations of barbershop women would be enough for this story, but there's even one more.  Laura's seven-year-old daughter Alyssa hangs out at the shop after school, and has been known to perform a few haircuts herself.

"I think we've all enjoyed having the time together," said Rose.  "Which is an opportunity most families don't get."
