EDMOND, Oklahoma -

A counselor at the Sunset Elementary School in Edmond was named one of the six finalists for the School Counselor of the Year award in America.

Kenneth Elliott, along with the other finalists, traveled to Washington D.C. on February 1 for three days of celebratory events. Elliott is one of more than 270 elementary, middle, and secondary school counselors nationwide who were nominated for the School Counselor of the Year award.

"Students, families and faculty at Sunset Elementary School respect and love Elliott for his commitment, compassion, support and integrity," said Jane Martinsen, a retired Sunset Elementary third grade teacher. "Administrators and teachers in the school district depend on him as an advocate and resource. The community has come to know him for his professionalism in dealing with the difficult issues that students and families now face."

According to school officials, the finalists will have meetings with their members of Congress, attend a congressional briefing, and tour the White House. They will also participate in a briefing at the Office of the Vice President, and be formally recognized at a black-tie gala.

The award is presented by the American School Counselor Association. It honors the professionals who devote their careers to serving as advocates and often lifesavers for the nation's students.
