Cold Gear

Posted: Updated:

I'm an avid crossfit, boot camp junkie, and with the weather turning colder it's essential to change your workout apparel to protect your body from the elements. The main challenges of course are going to be keeping your body at a comfortable temperature for you, as well as keeping yourself as dry as possible as you perspire in the cold.

You want to go with a winter cap that covers as much of your head as possible, especially on those brutally cold, windy days here in Oklahoma. If you suffer from asthma, or breathing in cold air causes uncomfortable burning in your chest or lungs, opting to wear a balaclava may help alleviate the sting of the frigid winter air. Dress in layers comprised of polyester, or a polyester blend to keep you warm, help manage your perspiration and keep the rain and wind off you. I usually bring gloves along in case my hands get too cold; they are small and lightweight and can easily be tucked into your pockets if your hands get too warm.

The most important gear you can have is your own mind. Know your body, know when to push and know when to pack it in. If you begin to shiver uncontrollably, have trouble focusing or notice a decline in motor skills you may be suffering from the onset of hypothermia – a potentially deadly drop in body temperature. If you begin to experience these symptoms, cease exercising and get out of the cold!
