Gerald Goodridge,

GUTHRIE, Oklahoma -- Guthrie jumped out to a 21-7 advantage, but had to rely on a last-second field goal to claim the top spot in District 5A 1 with a 38-35 victory over the previously unbeaten Carl Albert Titans Friday.

The Blue Jays opened the game with a long drive, capped off by a one-yard run by Luke Davis to put Guthrie on top 7-0. Carl Albert fumbled the ensuing kick and Davis scored his second rushing touchdown to put the Blue Jays on top 14-0.

Darvonta Wilson broke the seal for the Titans, scoring from eight yards out to cut the deficit in half. However, the Titans turned the ball over again and Guthrie quarterback Bryan Dutton scored from 18 yards out to take a 21-7 lead.

Late in the second quarter, Carl Albert quarterback Dillan Dansby punched it in from one yard out to cut the lead to 21-14 to end the half.

The Titans came out to start the second half with a long drive and capped off a long drive with a two-yard touchdown to tie the game 21-21.

Carl Albert defense forced a Guthrie punt, but the Blue Jays fumble the punt and the Titans recover to take over at the 40. Three plays later, Dutton called his own number yet again and scores to give the Blue Jays a 28-21 advantage.

However, the Titans answered on the next drive, Alex Polston scored from 23 yards out to tie the game at 28 with less than 20 seconds left in the third quarter.

Two drives later, the Titans force a fumble on a Blue Jay option and recover on Guthrie's 30-yard line. After converting on a fourth down, Dansby connected with Tank Richmond for a 28-yard touchdown pass to take a 35-28 lead, the Titans' first of the game.

On the ensuing Guthrie drive, Kai Collins catches the ball behind a defender on a 19-yard pass to tie the game 35-35 with just 2:26 left in the game. Dansby mishandled the snap on the first play of the next drive, and the Blue Jays recovered the fumble – the Titans' fourth of the night – at the CA 20 with 2:20 left to play.

A holding call gave the Blue Jays the Ball at the 10-yard line and Guthrie runs out most of the clock and kicks an 18-yard field goal with just 12 seconds left to play.

The Titans' last-ditch effort falls short and the Blue Jays escape with yet another close, home victory over Carl Albert.

Guthrie will now head to El Reno to try and move to 7-0, while Carl Albert heads to Ada to take on the hot Cougars.
