OKLAHOMA CITY – Due to heavy rains, EMSA wasn't dispatched on any fireworks-related injuries last year.  This year, however, hot and dry weather has set a different stage and EMSA officials are sending a message for Oklahomans to be careful during festivities this year.

EMSA Operating Supervisor Mike Roy said the dry, hot conditions this holiday have increased the risks of fire and injuries.

"The potential for catching something on fire which in turn can hurt somebody or injure somebody is a lot greater this year," he said.

EMSA paramedics are prepared for an increase in calls this weekend and Roy recommends leaving the fireworks to professionals.

For those who prefer their own displays, Roy recommends having adults light the fireworks while keeping children at a safe distance.  He also recommends that people wear closed-toe shoes and dress appropriately to avoid getting burned.
