Grassfire Breaks Out Near Lexington

Staff and Wire Reports

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Cleveland County firefighters worked to put out a grassfire near Lexington Monday evening.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or property damage in the blaze Monday afternoon. A dispatcher for the Lexington Fire Department says a couple of tankers and brush pumpers had been sent to the scene of the fire, located at 180 Avenue and Duffy.

She said the Cedar Country Volunteer Fire Department was the main department handling the blaze.

Aerial television footage showed the fire had charred some grassland and was burning in a group of trees. The rough land kept the flames from spreading quickly. There were no signs of homes or other structures in the vicinity.

Lingering drought, dry vegetation, low relative humidity and strong winds have left Oklahoma susceptible to wildfires in recent weeks.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
