My 2 Cents: The Good Old Days And Fight Of The Century

I had to text message my brothers to reminisce about where we were 40 years ago tonight.

It was a late night, and a school night, but we wouldn't have missed it for anything. We'd looked forward to it for weeks.

My dad loaded us boys up in his car and drove us to downtown Oklahoma City.

We didn't get "downtown" much so that was exciting to a nine-year-old boy and there was a big crowd when we pulled up to the old Centre Theater. It's not the art museum.

I didn't remember how much dad paid for the tickets, so I pulled up a 40-year-old ad and it showed they went for $12.50 each and they were being sold through Stereo City.

I remember the picture on the big screen was a little grainy and you couldn't hear the sound very well because the 1,500 or so people that had packed the Centre Theater were really whooping and hollering.

What I remember most about that night, and watching that closed circuit television feed from Madison Square Garden, was when Muhammad Ali landed flat on his back in the 15th round after Joe Frazier caught him with a lunging left hook.

You see kids, anyone 40 or younger, we didn't have pay per view cable in our homes way back then.

Forty years ago tonight millions of us got dressed up, drove to movie theaters around the country and watched the fight of the century beamed in from the Big Apple.

Those were the good old days.
