Freshman Congressman James Lankford Shares First Impression Of Washington

Posted: Updated:

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma freshman Congressman James Lankford's initial impression of Washington, D.C. is it's "a mess."

Lankford was sworn in last month, is serving on three committees and is chairing a sub-committee on intergovernmental relationships.

During a visit to News 9 Friday, he said his sub-committee will be looking at the problem of unfunded federal mandates and how to do away with them.

"Absolutely, we're looking at not only mandates that can be done away with, but we're also looking at the process, to keep it from happening again in the future. It's not just solve the issues now and then more come up, no, we've got to solve the process and be able to tell the federal government ‘We can't do unfunded mandates,'" said Lankford.

Lankford also serves on the House budget committee. He said figuring out how to cut back on spending is the biggest issue facing Congress right now.
