Staff and Wire Reports

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City police said four students have been taken to hospitals after an Oklahoma City school bus crashed.

Master Sgt. Gary Knight said the bus was headed to the Emerson Alternative School when the accident occurred about 8:05 a.m. Wednesday.

Emergency Medical Services Authority spokeswoman Lara O'Leary said ambulances took a 16-year-old and three 17-year-old students to two separate hospitals.

Police said the bus driver, 49-year-old Katherine Cooper, had exited Interstate 40 and was headed north on Classen when she said the brakes failed, sending the bus careening across two lanes of traffic and finally crashing into the median dividing the roadway.

The bus came to rest on a flagpole and brick wall.

A fifth student on the bus wasn't hurt.

The accident remains under investigation.
