My 2 Cents: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Hands Over The Gavel

There was one of those surreal moments in American politics today.

Since it happened in the middle of the work day, I know a lot of people didn't get to see the transfer of power from Democrat Nancy Pelosi to the new Speaker of the House Republican John Boehner, too bad.

It was a historic moment marked by pregnant pauses, nervous foot shifting, flubbed lines and uncomfortable embraces.

Safe to say, had Pelosi and Boehner been campaigning today neither one of them would have won.

Pelosi, for her part, appeared to be way too happy for someone who just got booted out of office.

And Republicans sat on their hands as she rattled off her list of accomplishments as Speaker, Boehner couldn't sit on his; he just gazed off into the distance.

He's already developed a reputation for getting a bit emotional at times, and he was dabbing tears from his eyes and blowing his nose even before he was handed the ridiculously large gavel he's chosen to rule over the House with.

All in all, it was an awkward changing of the guard in the U.S. House; hope it's not a sign of things to come.
