ARCADIA, Oklahoma -- City council leaders in Arcadia have implemented a 30-day work stoppage on a giant billboard recently erected in front of the famous Round Barn.

People in the community and members of the Arcadia Historical Society wanted the sign taken down. They said the billboard is a threat to the landmark. Zoom Media Group LLC owns the property the sign is on. The owner of the company told a member of the historical society he would be willing to take the sign down if someone else paid the costs.

During a meeting Tuesday night, the Arcadia City Council decided work on the billboard should stop for 30 days while the city considered five options.

  1. Zoom Media offers the Arcadia Historical Society either $10,000 or first year of income generated by the billboard, potentially $21,600.
  2. The Arcadia Historical Society or concerned individuals can buy new land to relocate the sign. It must be located on Route 66 in Arcadia.
  3. The Arcadia Historical Society or concerned individuals can get permission to move the sign to land available in Edmond.
  4. The Arcadia Historical Society can buy the sign from Zoom Media at a cost of $57,719.20.
  5. Zoom Media donates two of four advertising locations on the billboard to Arcadia Historical Society.
