My 2 Cents: Bullying in Schools

Have we spent so much time and effort investing in our children's self-worth that they don't really care about anyone else? We're hearing more and more about bullying in our schools, and I don't believe it's just because it's being reported more often.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Have we spent so much time and effort investing in our children's self-worth that they don't really care about anyone else?

We're hearing more and more about bullying in our schools, and I don't believe it's just because it's being reported more often.

The latest case in the state involves an autistic middle school student in Crescent allegedly bullied by three other students. Someone videoed it and posted it on YouTube. The Crescent Police Chief said the boy was brutally attacked, and now the District Attorney has charged the kids with felony assault.

Watching the video makes me very angry.

Maybe I have a short memory. I know there have always been bullies around, but I don't remember this kind of stuff when I was growing up -- attacking the most vulnerable and then showing it off on YouTube or kid's being tormented to the point of suicide as a Perkins family claims their 11-year-old boy was back in May.

It's not the schools' fault. It's all they can do to educate our kids. Parents, we need to dial back on building their self-esteem and spend a lot more time teaching our kids about compassion and empathy.
