EDMOND, Oklahoma -- With the budget cuts post offices around the metro are facing, local non profits who rely on their canned food donations are struggling.

The Hope Center in Edmond helps more than 500 families with food and much needed meals every month, but with the canned food drive the Edmond post office can no longer hold in the fall due to budget cuts, the center will have to do without and are left in dire need.

"Last year we got more than 4,000 pounds of food just from that fall food drive from the post office, so it's a considerable food drive for us," said Chris Sperry, Hope Center of Edmond executive director.

Now, local groups like Edmond Young Professionals are stepping in to help restock those empty shelves. Their goal is to gather 8,000 pounds of food by the end of October in its first annual Trick-or-Eat event.

"We're going to amass our volunteers from all walks of life and go out and canvass neighborhoods and see what we can raise going door-to-door," said Casey Moore, Edmond Young Professionals.

The group will be collecting the food during the Halloween weekend.

The post office will still help with donations during the national canned food drive in May.
