Staff and Wire Reports
WYANDOTTE, Oklahoma -- A female student has died after an accident on a piece of playground equipment at a Wyandotte school.
The 9-year-old has been identified as Alyssa Avila.
Superintendent Troy Gray didn't have the exact time, but said it happened Thursday afternoon. He said the piece of playground equipment was secured and won't be used again.
"We will release more details and information as it becomes available. Our sole focus at this moment is on the family, our students, faculty, and community at Wyandotte Public Schools," Gray said.
Gray said school staff met on Friday before classes begin to discuss what happened, and counselors will be available to students, staff or anyone who may need them in the Ottawa County community, located in far northeastern Oklahoma.
Gray said the Wyandotte Nation Tribal Police are handling an investigation into the accident because the school is located within the tribe's jurisdiction.
Tribal police didn't immediately return a message left seeking comment
