NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Norman police said a 16-year-old was accidentally shot by a 14-year-old Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the teens, who are family members, were playing with a handgun when it went off and hit the 16-year-old in the face.

The victim has been transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She is currently in stable condition. Her name has not been released.

The incident happened in the 1700 block of Village Dr.

Police said this was an incident that should have been avoided.

"Guns should not be loaded. They should be left unloaded unless you are about to use them. They should be locked away," said Norman Police Capt. Tom Easley.

Investigators interviewed witnesses and the 14-year-old who discharged the gun.
