OKLAHOMA CITY -- Thursday's arrest of a 69-year-old Payne County man for sex crimes against his own family brought to light the disturbing reality that has destroyed thousands of children and their families' lives. That's why experts say it is so important to recognize early warning signs.
Many children who have been molested by a family member keep their abuse a secret because they are ashamed or afraid to break up the family, and when it is revealed, it is often by accident.
Experts said that's what pedophiles are counting on.
The case against John Phillip Ward, 69, includes disturbing and disgusting allegations that he raped multiple children, including three young family members in his home and at hotels, and then sold the pictures and videos of his incestuous crimes to a child porn Web site. The victims who finally came forward report it said the crimes had been going on for years.
Steve Tanner is the Agent In Charge of the OSBI's Internet crimes against children unit as well as the child abuse response team. He said he sees cases where molesters prey on their own family members all too often.
"There's easy access and they have more control over their victims than they would if it was just somebody that was just snatched up off the street," Tanner said. "The only guilt that's associated with it is they got caught, and now they're going to jail."
What's even more disturbing is pedophiles are getting encouragement to do it over the Internet. Tanner said a disturbing Web site has been shut down. At first glance, the site appears innocent enough, but taking a closer look reveals the site's disgusting content.
It is a virtual training guide for pedophiles that not only promotes sex with children but instructs them on how to find their victims. Family members are listed first. Single parents are listed second.
"Single parents and moms, watch your kids. That's all I can tell you," Tanner said. "These guys are out there. It's up to the adults and family members to protect the children."
Tanner said education is key to breaking this secret cycle. That's why he said it is so important to foster open communication with your children. Tanner said parents should encourage children to talk to a trusted adult, whether it is a teacher, a friend or someone else.
Tanner also said it is import to watch out for signs of abuse including a significant change in behavior or refusal to visit a particular family member.
